Director – Corresponding Member of RAS Nikolay I. Voropai. The Institute was established in 1960 under the name Siberian Energy Institute (SEI) and was renamed in 1997. Former directors: The priority topics of basic research:
The Institute has worked out and is developing further the theory and methods of systems study in power engineering. The principles have been formulated, and mathematical models and methods suggested for studying and optimizing the development of the country's fuel and energy complex in general, and of its components, the power systems, as well as of new power generating installations, including with consideration for the external and internal linkages, and the input information uncertainty. The hierarchy and properties of large power grids, including reliability, survivability, and safety, have been revealed. This research direction, initiated by the Institute in the 1960s, was progressing rapidly and gave a powerful impetus to the practical implementation of system approach in power generation management. The theory and scientific methodology have been created with a focus on optimal development and operation of electric power systems (EPS) of different levels, including territorial, regional, national, and international. New information technologies were developed for investigation and management within the EPS, which have been implemented in supervisory automatic-control systems, and in systems of automated designing (SAD) of the EPS. In the area of pipeline systems used in the power industry, the theory of hydraulic circuits has been developed; it is an original direction of research that has been formulated and is being pursued as an interindustrial scientific-and-technological discipline. It provides general methodical tools to solve the problems of managing the operation and development of pipeline and hydraulic systems of different types and purposes. The Institute has developed an advanced methodology that has been applied during recent years as the basis to develop the energy strategies and programs for several regions of the Russian Federation, the sections of the Russia's Energy Strategy into 2030, as well as many other guidance documents relating to power generation development and the fuel and energy complex. The institute develops extensive contacts with scientific organizations in many countries: the USA, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Great Britain, Hungary, Japan, China, Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Poland, Canada, etc., takes part in international research projects, and organizes international conferences and workshops. In 2008–2011, the Institute was a leading organization in the large project entitled “Intelligent Coordination of Operation and Emergency Control of the EU and Russian Power Grids” within the 7-th Framework Program of Scienti?c Cooperation Between the EU and Russia.
The Energy Systems Institute is the organizer of the following conferences and workshops:
The research results of the Institute have been awarded the USSR State Prize, the RF Government Prizes, G.M. Krzhizhanovsky Prizes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and other Prizes. The results are widely used in research and planning and designing organizations as well as directly in companies supplying electricity, heat, oil, gas, and coal.
